Yonglee & the Doltang
DOLTANG is made up of five exceptional musicians from the Korean jazz scene. This remarkable quintet is led on stage by pianist and composer Yonglee, whose musical narrative is beautifully complemented by the other four members — Lee Youngwoo, Jo Yechan, Kang Hwansu, and Seok Dayeon.
The band seamlessly blends jazz rock and progressive rock with 21st-century classical music and unrestrained improvisation. Their stage presence is rich with self-awareness, satirical reflections, and lyricism. Though they come from various regions of South Korea and are native to the country, their music transcends ethnic identity. Their compositions are marked by complex structures and multi-layered rhythms interwoven with accessible melodies that captivate audiences at climactic moments.
DOLTANG’s improvisation stretches far and wide across their compositions, incorporating both acoustic and electric instruments. It’s a constant exploration of new jazz territories. The band is a winner of Jazzahead! 2024 and has also performed at the Jarasum Jazz Festival, Ulsan Jazz Festival, and CJ Azit in Korea. Their debut album Surface of Time was named the Best Jazz Album of 2022 by South Korea’s MM Jazz magazine.
