For 15 years, trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire has occupied a unique place at both the center and the edges of the jazz scene, recently exploring classical music and hip-hop as well. His innovative compositions draw inspiration from various genres and life experiences, creating pieces that are both poetic and bold. Through his distinctive approach, he has gained critical acclaim and support from institutions such as the Doris Duke Foundation and the Kennedy Center. Akinmusire strives to break down barriers in music, crafting emotional narratives that reflect the stories of communities, challenge norms, and pay homage to Black innovation and tradition.

Born in Oakland, California, Akinmusire was noticed early on by saxophonist Steve Coleman, which led to a European tour when he was just 19 years old. He honed his skills at the Manhattan School of Music and the University of Southern California, studying under jazz masters such as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. In 2007, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, which marked the beginning of his impressive recording career.

Akinmusire’s latest album, Honey From a Winter Stone, released on January 17, 2025, is a collaboration with vocalist-improviser Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, synthesist Chiquitamagic, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos String Quartet. The album has been praised for its deep exploration of the Afro-American experience, blending modern string sounds, freestyle, and contemporary jazz into dynamic, richly detailed soundscapes.
