Nubya Garcia is an artist who defies being placed into a single genre. Jazz? Certainly. The London-based saxophonist, composer, and bandleader studied the genre under pianist Nikki Yeoh at Camden Music. However, her albums, such as Source (2020) and Odyssey (2024), reveal a much broader creative scope – a blend of jazz, classical music, dub, R&B, and other styles that Garcia is passionate about exploring. All of it is born from her love for discovery and pushing boundaries.

Her second album, Odyssey, released in September 2024 by Concord Jazz, is a majestic work that combines orchestration with R&B, jazz, broken beat, and dub. The result is a light, almost ethereal album that still maintains a pulsating groove. It’s a personal story of rediscovering her love for composition.

Her debut album, Source (2020), received critical acclaim, including a Tiny Desk (Home) Concert performance for NPR, a “Best New Music” review from Pitchfork, and “Album of the Month” from Rolling Stone. The New York Times described Source as “a sweeping set of jazz with Afro-Caribbean influences, condensing a lifetime of experiences into an hour.” The album charted in the top thirty of the UK charts and was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize.
