The Headhunters
Few bands can boast such a rich history as The Headhunters. This history began in 1973, when the iconic musician Herbie Hancock formed The Headhunters – with saxophonist/clarinetist Bennie Maupin, bassist Paul Jackson Jr., drummer Harvey Mason, and percussionist Bill Summers.
What each member of The Headhunters brought to the band helped create a timeless legacy and history that most bands can only dream of. Their blend of jazz, funk, and rock reached millions of fans of these genres. With over a million albums sold, the band’s legacy has inspired musicians of every genre for years, was sampled by various rap artists in the 80s and 90s, and has influenced the playing style of countless musicians to this day.
The impact of The Headhunters remains a global phenomenon, and their collaboration with Hancock turned out to be a life-changing experience. The band released six subsequent studio albums, including ‘Thrust’ in 1974, featuring new drummer Mike Clark, and, from 1975 onward without Hancock, ‘Survival of the Fittest’ and ‘Straight from the Gate’ in 1977.
