Yoni Mayraz support Omasta [Astigmatic Week]
On September 11th, a short concert series called Astigmatic Week will kick off at Jassmine, where listeners will have the opportunity to experience the diversity of bands representing this renowned Polish label. On September 14th, we will conclude the week-long residency of Astigmatic Records with concerts by Yoni Mayraz and Omasta.
The rapidly emerging jazz musician, Yoni Mayraz, explores dark spirits on his fiery new album *Dybbuk Tse!*, released by Astigmatic Records. Yoni blends jazz with elements of 90s New York hip-hop, old-school breakbeats, and Middle Eastern music, creating fresh, hybrid forms.
A highly skilled keyboardist and producer, Yoni entered the jazz scene in 2020 with *Rough Cuts*, an EP that introduced the world to his unique musical style. Since then, the London-based, Tel Aviv-raised musician has released two singles, *The Rat* and *Snow*, through Brighton’s Village Live Records.
Recorded live with his band in a dusty, wooden studio over a spring week last year, *Dybbuk Tse!* showcases how Yoni directs his listeners towards familial folklore (the title refers to the command to remove a malevolent wandering spirit, the Dybbuk, which invades and possesses a living person until it is exorcised), suggesting the concept of emotional exorcisms through music.
The shared goal of Kraków-based group Omasta is to explore new paths in music without erasing the old ones. The band draws inspiration from street culture and jazz. Despite their short tenure, the group has performed in many cities across Poland and abroad (Jazz Cafe – London, UK; Gent Jazz Festival – Ghent, Belgium), and has supported the legendary Slum Village. Omasta is currently working on releasing their debut album under Polish label Astigmatic Records.
